Recent heavy rains, floods, and landslides have caused widespread devastation in the Kotagala area of Sri Lanka, severely affecting more than 400 families. Several homes collapsed, while many others were inundated with mud and water, destroying belongings and possessions that families had accumulated over a lifetime.
The floodwaters rose unexpectedly between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m., leaving residents with little or no time to protect their homes or belongings. Many families were forced to flee to safety, carrying only a few essential items and leaving behind almost everything they owned.
Witnessing the suffering of families in nearby villages, Parish Priest Fr. Anthony visited the affected communities to assess their situation and understand their immediate needs. In response, the Church arranged to provide bed sheets to 40 families as an initial expression of care and support during this difficult time.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Sunimal, one of the affected residents, said, “We lost everything we had earned, and we are deeply saddened. However, I am truly grateful to the church for providing us with this essential item when we needed it most.”
The Church continues to stand alongside those affected, offering practical assistance and encouragement as families begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
Let us pray for God’s protection, strength, comfort, and hope for all the families affected by the floods, and for grace and provision as they recover and rebuild their lives.
