On Thursday, May 8, 2025, a solemn Memorial Service was held at St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church Cathedral, Thiruvalla, marking the first anniversary of the repose of His Holiness Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan—the beloved Father and Shepherd of the Church.
The service was presided over by His Holiness Moran Mor Dr. Samuel Theophilus Metropolitan, along with bishops and archbishops of the Church. H.G. The Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baseliose Metropolitan, Primate and Metropolitan of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church, delivered a heartfelt homily reflecting on the life, faith, and ministry of the reposed Metropolitan. Also gracing the occasion was H.G. Dr. Mathews Mor Anthimos Metropolitan of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church (Muvattupuzha & Angamali Region).
This sacred occasion was a time of deep remembrance and heartfelt thanksgiving, as clergy, laity, and guests gathered to honour the life and legacy of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I—a shepherd who walked faithfully before the Lord, serving the Holy Church with love, humility, and grace.
Following the Divine Liturgy, incense prayers were offered at the tomb of the reposed Metropolitan, seeking eternal rest for his soul. As incense rose from his tomb, so did the prayers and gratitude of the faithful—for the gift he was, and for the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Though no longer present in body, his spirit continues to inspire.
May his memory be eternal.
