Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever more. And may the name of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed in and through our life in the world, bringing peace, hope, and joy to everyone around now and forevermore.
Easter is right at the door. During the past almost 50 days, we have been journeying through the passion and suffering of our Lord Jesus, the season we call the Great Lent. This season is meant to be a refreshing, renewing season, one where we rededicate our lives to live a purposeful and effective life ahead.
But honestly, when we look around us, there is very little to be happy about. We are going through unprecedentedly challenging times. The conflict in the Middle East has dealt a devastating blow to the global community and economy. As critical supply chains have been disrupted, its ripple effects are being felt all across our world. This has led to shortages of food grains, agricultural products, cooking gas and petroleum which along with problems in the free movement of cargo ships are threatening food security and agricultural production. The rising cost of living is creating concern all over the world.
In the great continent of Africa, there is a mass starvation incident. Some 20 million people are faced with the worst famine of our present century. There have been outbreaks of deadly cholera in the Democratic Republic of Congo where thousands have literally perished.
There has been an alarming increase in terrorism and human trafficking due to conflict in other parts of the world. Thousands of innocent naive children and families have been displaced having to run for their lives, and they belong nowhere now. We also hear painful news about people killing their own relatives. Even parents killing their children and children hurting the parents who raised them. These are signs that human values and ethics are weakening.
Differences of majority and minority, caste, color and religion are creating more divisions than peace and harmony. Instead of helping people live together in harmony, these differences are causing conflict and making life more difficult for everyone.
So, we ask where is God? Where is peace? Is there a ray of hope I can find? What is the answer? Who will give an answer to these heartwrenching issues? I admit it is a genuine question and a problem. But then let me tell you the answer from a real-life story.
More than half a century ago, a young couple was facing a very challenging situation in their life. There was a devastating war going on. A movement called “God is Dead” was destroying the faith of many. There was much social unrest, assassinations and political tensions were so high and people were anxious for the future. The husband was facing a serious illness and the young wife was pregnant with a child. They were overwhelmed and they wondered how can they bring a child into a world like this.
It was during this time that the message of Easter became very real to them. They reflected on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and realized since Jesus lives, the future is not hopeless. Since Jesus lives, fear does not have the final word. Since Jesus lives, life is worth living even in uncertain times. Out of the struggle, they wrote one of the most beloved songs of Christians all around the world. It goes like this:
“Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because he lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know, yes, I know He holds my future
And life is worth the living just because He lives.”
My dear precious children, Easter is not just an event in history. It is an event to history. Easter reminds us that no setback is final. There’s always hope again. Jesus rose from the greatest defeat and made the impossible possible. Behold, everything has become new. Easter proves that death is not the final chapter. It offers hope beyond death and the grave. It turns the ultimate enemy of humans, death and its fear, into a doorway to eternal life.
Easter is the bedrock of peace and reconciliation of humanity with Almighty God. Easter offers the unconditional love and unlimited hope and grace of Almighty God upon humanity, our world. It gives us a new beginning at all times, everywhere even when we humans have repeatedly failed. Easter shows that God is our firm foundation. In Him, in God we stand secure even when we and the world around us is changing and uncertain. The resurrection of Jesus makes the future livable, the present bearable, and death conquerable.
And so, what should be our response? What should be my response? Easter, I say, therefore, is not merely a historical event to remember, a festival to be celebrated but a living power and hope to unleash today.
So, as you listen to this message from me today, please do not leave the message behind. The same power that split the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth 2,000 years ago is available to fix our brokenness, restore our hope, and transform our futures. The stone is rolled away. Not just so you can look in, but so you and I can walk out. Walk out of fear, walk out of doubt, and walk into the destiny resurrection has bought for you.
Now walk out of the tomb of despair. Stop living like a prisoner and live with the resurrection hope. Unshakable, bold, fearless and free. Because He lives,
I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know Yes, I know, He holds my future. And life, this frailing, fragile life is worth the living just because He lives.
My children go forth with that hope unlimited. Christ is risen and He is risen indeed. This is my prayer for me. As I have been preparing this, I’ve been tremendously encouraged in my inner being. So, I speak to you not just a homily, a speech per se, it is life.
May God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit grant you this confidence, this hope, and give you that ability to trust in Him and walk in the newness of life, making a world so bright and hopeful for you and for everyone around. Amen+
