Diocese of Jorhat Extends Compassionate Relief to Over 100 Flood-Affected Families in Upper Assam

Responding swiftly to the devastating floods that struck Upper Assam, the Diocese of Jorhat of Believers Eastern Church reached out to vulnerable families with emergency relief, bringing hope and practical assistance to communities that had lost nearly everything.

Under the guidance of Archbishop His Eminence Joshua Mor Barnabas Episcopa, the diocesan team worked tirelessly to prepare and distribute essential supplies to flood-affected families.

Moved by the suffering around them, church members contributed generously through prayers and financial support, while well-wishers also came forward with donations. Every contribution was used to purchase much-needed relief materials for families in distress.

The relief packages included rice, dal, potatoes, salt, Nutrela, biscuits, liquid milk, clothing, buckets, mugs, sanitary pads, and other essential household items. On 31 July 2026, the diocese distributed these supplies to more than 100 families in Sivasagar district, serving the communities of Nemaigarhabi Gaon, Santok, Nepalikhuti Bihubor, and Nazira.

The relief brought encouragement to many who had lost their homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones. Recipients expressed heartfelt gratitude for the timely assistance. Among them were widows, daily wage earners, and families living in temporary shelters, many of whom said the support had given them renewed hope during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

The relief effort followed the catastrophic flooding that swept across Upper Assam on 19 July 2026. Torrential floodwaters inundated villages with little warning, washing away homes, farmland, livestock, and personal belongings. Charaideo and Sivasagar were among the worst-affected districts, where entire communities were left devastated.

As of 3 August 2026, the death toll from the floods in Assam had risen to 87. Although floodwaters had begun to recede in many areas, nearly 130,000 people remained affected by the disaster, with countless families continuing to face the loss of their homes, livelihoods, and basic necessities.

Even as immediate relief has reached many families, the need remains immense. Thousands continue to live in temporary shelters, uncertain about their future and facing the ongoing threat of heavy rains. The Diocese of Jorhat requests the prayers of the faithful for all those affected—that God would comfort those who have lost loved ones, strengthen families as they rebuild their lives, provide new opportunities for those who have lost their livelihoods, and protect vulnerable communities from further flooding.
